Prologue
It was a dark leafbare night. The moon shone down on the RiverClan camp. A soft breeze blew up, twirling the snowflakes around in circles. Suddenly a sharp yowl split the silence. A queen was having her kits. A cat hurried through towards the nursery with a mouthful of herbs. “Oh no.” She fretted. “It’s too early.” The scent of blood quickly filled her nose. “Skyheart, please help.” She heard a weak voice call. She put down her bundle of herbs and nosed one towards the queen. “Willowleaf, eat this herb.” Skyheart urged. Willowleaf devoured the herb quickly despite the bitter taste. Soon a small kit was birthed. She was pure silver “How beautiful.” Skyheart thought. A little while later, another kit was born. He was bigger than his sister, with a silver pelt and darker stripes. She licked the kits until they were clean, then put them at their mother’s belly to suckle. “I’m lucky they survived, especially the mother. She had lost so much blood already.” She tiredly walked back to her den.
When she got there she shook the snow off her pelt and prepared the remedies for the whitecough and greencough that would come this year. She looked at her store of herbs and realised that her catmint supply was running low. “I must go and get some soon, in case greencough comes early.” She trotted out of her den towards the grove of trees. She observed the scenery as she walked. Seeing the forest cloaked in snow always amazed her.
She reached the place where catmint usually grew. The snow was covering the herbs, so she lightly scruded at the spot where she thought they were. A couple plants remained. She bit off a few, but left some behind, so there would be some plants for next leafbare. She started back to camp. While she was walking a strange rustling noise seemed to follow her. She quickened her pace, but the noise always seemed to be right behind her. She broke into a run a pelted through the reeds into the RiverClan camp. As she turned around, it looked as if a shadowy figure flitted away. “My eyes must be playing tricks on me.” Skyheart thought. She turned around and disappeared into her den.
