Here's a story dealing with Ravenpaw and Barley after the clans leave...
PROLOGUE
Moonlight poured over the hard asphalt, illuminating everything with a soft glow. A lone cat sat beside it, fur unruffled as no monsters had come by for a long while. She thought of seasons past, when he was still with her. As troubled as their lives had been, he was still there. As she thought this, another cat came up and sat beside her. “We should be getting back.” He mewed. “Come on, let’s cross.” She gave him a nod, pressing close to him.
“All right, Fuzz.” He glanced down at her paws and sighed.
“Your paws always seem to delicate for these hard roads.”
CHAPTER 1
Barley sat alone in the barn, looking up at the giant moon high in the sky. Vaguely, he wondered when Ravenpaw might return. He had wandered off again, something that was happening more and more frequently. Presently, he noticed the black cat meandering along back to the hay-filled barn. Barley got up and turned back towards the interior of the barn, intending to catch a mouse or two. He had just pounced on his first when his black companion loped in. Barley looked up, the mouse dangling from his jaws. Dropping it beside the spot where he normally slept, he padded over to Ravenpaw. “Hi.” He mewed. “You’re back a little late tonight.” Ravenpaw barely even glanced in his direction as he wandered through the hay-filled barn. “Ravenpaw! Barley meowed. The black cat finally turned around.
“Oh, hi Barley!” He seemed to have noticed him for only the first time then, and Barley purred with amusement.
“What’s wrong with you? You’re even more light-headed than usual!” Ravenpaw sheepishly licked his chest a couple of times, trying to hide his embarrassment.
“Well, Barley… I was just out and lost track of time.” Barley looked at him closely.
“Ravenpaw, the only things that would make you lose track of time would one of three: You were in the forest, at ThunderClan; you had an exceptional hunting trip, or you met a pretty she-cat. The clans went across the mountains, and you obviously weren’t hunting, since you didn’t bring anything back. So what’s her name?” Ravenpaw stood looking quite shocked at his friend’s reasoning, and garbled out a few broken mews.
“Um… uh… where would I meet another cat? Like you said, the clans aren’t here anymore.”
“Oh, come now, Ravenpaw. We both know that that’s not the only way to meet another cat. Besides, you have the scent of Twoleg place all over you.” Ravenpaw looked slightly crestfallen at this turn of events, and then relented.
“All right, it’s just that I didn’t expect you to figure it out so soon. Her name is Angel.”
CHAPTER 2
Fuzz sat watching his daughter with stern eyes. She was trying to bail herself out of another mess. Thinking about it, he realized that yes, he was being overprotective, but she was his daughter, after all, and he would never stop protecting her. “Dad… I’m old enough to make my own decisions. I’ll tell you about him, but you can’t pressure me about it. I’m many seasons old. I could go live somewhere else if I wanted.”
“I know.” Fuzz replied. “But I am your father, and I would like to know about this mystery cat.”
“And I will tell you.” Her eyes got a drifting, dreamy faraway look to them. I just can’t tell you how great he is. You’ll have to meet him.” Fuzz gave a snort.
“Hmmph. We’ll see if this cat is all he’s cracked up to be.”
“Do you think Mom will want to meet him too?”
“Hah! Do I! Of course she will. We both know her better than that.” He gave his daughter a friendly wink. “Come on. It’s just about feeding time. You can tell us a little more about this mystery cat there.” Just as he finished speaking, a loud yowl came from the door of the Twoleg nest.
“Fuzz! Angel! You both know it’s dinnertime! Get your tails in here!” Both cats purred with amusement, and ran for the door, side by side.
CHAPTER 3
Barley sleepily dragged himself out of a near-comatose state. Ravenpaw had been talking for forever about this Angel. All Barley had really grasped was that she was white and pretty. As he came back to wakefulness, he managed to catch the end of Ravenpaw’s near-sermon on his lover’s beauty and grace. He purred with amusement, because he had always known that someday Ravenpaw would find himself a pretty cat, and move out to go live somewhere else with her. “And Barley… we thought we might come live in the barn here with you.” Barley was shocked. This came as a complete surprise to the older cat.
“Um… well, that would be fine, but…” His voice trailed off, and he looked worried.
“What is it, Barley?” Ravenpaw asked, concerned.
“Well… I just haven’t been around a nice lady cat for a while. I’m not completely sure how to act.” Ravenpaw stared at his friend for a moment, and then began mewing with laughter. He fell on his side, rolling back and forth in the throes of his amusement. Subsequently, he fell off the hay bale that he had been sitting on. Barley leaped after him, ears flat against his head in annoyance. “What?” Ravenpaw lay on his back, alternating between gasping and purring. Once he had regained his breath, he answered the other cat’s question.
“Barley, you are the most polite cat I have ever seen. You’re a natural, and she’s pretty easygoing.”
“If you say so.” Barley answered. “I should meet her sometime.” Ravenpaw immediately lit up.
“That’s a great idea! We can do that tomorrow!” He bounced around a little, simply excited at the thought of seeing her again. Barley purred.
“Let’s catch something to eat. I’m hungry after all this excitement. It’s almost too much for an old cat like me to bear.”
